It’s war! GOP establishment prepares for battle against grassroots base

logo

Before I get into the details of the title of this post, let me say that I already know some of you are going to want to react to what I write with a bit of malice. I’ve taken a little heat for my post ripping Newt Gingrich about his “Party over Principles” stance over on my personal blog, so I fully understand there are folks who feel very passionate about this issue. But let me also say that for every email against my position, there are twenty in support of it.

If you’re one of the few who are angry about all of this, do us a favor and point the fingers in the right direction.

If you haven’t been following the NY23 special election, I highly recommend you go read the scoop on my blog. In short, the GOP establishment took the liberty movement for granted, jumped behind the wrong candidate (a far left, liberal Republican) and expected the base to just fold and follow their pick without complaint.

At first. this all just appeared to be a poorly calculated decision for the beltway thugs who pretend to be the conservative movement. I mean, back when Newt Gingrich endorsed far left liberal Dede Sozzafava in the race, the grassroots movement was hardly paying attention. It wasn’t until about two weeks ago when the rest of the country realized what was going on.

During the past week, many movement conservatives have shown full support for conservative candidate Doug Hoffman in the race. Sarah Palin, Dick Armey, Club for Growth and MANY others have thrown their political weight behind him.

And not just the “players”… the Tea Party Movement has gotten involved in a huge way. Using the internet as vessel, the message of conservative candidate Doug Hoffman has traveled far and wide, and support for him has exploded.

Which left egg on the faces of all the establishment heads who jumped into the liberal Republican camp early on.

Mistakes were made. No doubt about it. But here is where it gets wild. Instead of doing the right thing, Newt Gingrich and crew have dug in their heels and are strongly defending their position.

Damage control was possible about five days ago, but now they’ve lost their chance. There is no turning back. They made the wrong choice. The refused to admit it and join the true base of the movement. And now they’re actually trying to preach to us that more of the same is needed to fix the problems more of the same created.

Bizarre.

All that said, one would think these groups would now keep their mouths shut and try to minimize the damage, right?

Wrong.

Politico reported today that the NRCC is actually goinjg to step up their efforts and dump another $300,000 into to media buys for far left candidate Dede Scozzafava.

The National Republican Congressional Committee remains committed to embattled GOP nominee Dede Scozzafava in the upstate New York House special election, even as many of the party’s top names throw their support to Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman.

Two party officials tell POLITICO that the NRCC will continue to air TV ads propping up Scozzafava in the days leading up to the Nov. 3 contest and plans to keep up a near relentless barrage of press releases slamming Hoffman.

Scozzafava, a state assemblywoman who supports gay marriage, abortion rights and has a close relationship with leading labor officials in her region, has been the target of sustained criticism from conservatives who claim she is too liberal for them to support her candidacy.

Not only is the NRCC going to waste donor dollars on a failed candidate with no hope of winning the race, they’re also going to attack the actual conservative in the race!

At this point, the only logical conclusion is that the NRCC (a huge hub of establishment consultants who leech off of donor money) and the rest of the old guard will arm itself for battle and wage war against the grassroots base rather than give it control.

For those in our movement who are saying “we don’t need to wage war against the machine right now”… wake up. The machine is waging war against you.

This is a fight the movement has been itching for. In my opinion, we should confront this machine and do so immediately.

Food for thought.

  1. It is time for the people to take back what is ours. The GOP better wake up, the people will not tolerate their liberty and their income being destroyed forever. If the far left can be in power in the Obama administration, then so can the far right.

  2. Russ Paladino says:

I agree with Drew….let’s bleed the GOP. I made the personal decision quite a while ago to direct my donations to reliable conservatives instead of the GOP. I think the only way to send a message that they understand is choke off the money flow.

  3. Denise says:

Please explain to me(with examples)why Dede Sozzafav is considered a far left liberal republican. I am trying to understand…

  4. rdk says:

Where was the primary on this New York - 23 battle? Internal fights should, I would think, be reserved for primary skirmishes. Perhaps the battle should be with the specific individuals who chose the Republican candidate and the process that allowed it. As far as I can determine, Newt’s sin is defence of a Republican candidate in order to eventually be able to wrest control of the Federal Government from the liberal/socialist/Democrat reign.

  5. We Virginia Republicans are watching the NY war with interest. We have been fighting that battle for some time and we are winning in Virginia. We ignore the NRCC and we are shedding RINOs at a rapid pace. We have a winning 2009 statewide ticket of Reagan Conservative Republicans that is driving liberals crazy and winning at the grassroots. We are attracting conservative Republicans, Independents, Libertarians, and Democrats. Our victory on November 3rd. will sound a clarion call for all true conservatives across the nation.

  6. Drew says:

If you want to change the Republican Party, stop giving them money and give it to ClubforGrowth.org or Senateconservatives.com! Its the only way to get the party leaders to take notice!

  7. Kevin M. Gholston says:

    Dear Eric,

I have been upset with the Republicans ever since John McCain became the candidate last year. With the Obama Machine doing its damage to our country, they have failed to make any difference in the fight and seem to think that moving the RNC left is the answer. Here is another example of that. I support your message and believe that the RNC is wrong. They should have realized it and changed tactics - but they have not. I will not send the RNC another penny and wish Mr. Hoffman good luck. I will donate some money to help him.

    Sincerely,

    Kevin Gholston

  8. The Republicans know how to shoot themselves in the foot. They keep on doing it. Hoffman is the peoples candidate, but the Republicans choose a candidate not for the people, but for the politicians. It is apparent that back room deals and corruption exist on a broad scale. However, We the People have awoken from our long benign neglect. American Patriots will be out in full force next year and send these lying criminal politicians a message loud and clear

  9. Helen Simon says:

These Republican elitists who want a big tent and are therefore willing to compromise integrity and truth, are very similar to the elitists we have in the White House and Congress (and czarland) trying to destroy our country. Corruption stinks on both sides, and THAT is what we shall purge with God’s help and for His glory, that our children may live in freedom rather than bondage.

  10. Dianne Mayersak says:

This is what is wrong with the NRCC. It is good old boys club. That is why we got McCain for President. It was his turn. That is why it is time for change and Tea Party is listening to us voters. It certainly hasn’t been the NRCC. They aren’t getting anymore of my money. This candidate that the NRCC is endorsing is just more of the same Washington Politics we despise.

  11. Steve Bentley says:

I got an e-mail update about the NRCC supporting a far left liberal Republican candidate in New York or somewhere. It also says that “the machine” has declared war on the grassroots movement and that “the movement” has been “itching” for a war for a long time now.

Well, the saying is “be careful of what you wish for”. The machine has power, real power. Does the movement have the power, enough power to take on the machine? You’re bragging about raising $4000 in 30 hours, the machine can raise that in 30 seconds or less. This could backfire and blow up in our face. By waging the war, the machine could fracture our forces causing a split within the movement. If that happens, they win.

  12. Gary Stewart says:

There is no way to stop this kind of politics without TERM LIMITS! These longtime Belt Ways need to go home and let new, more focused and conservitive leaders take their place.

  13. Jeff says:

The parties of today haProfessional alliance. The structure appears to be close to a politicians union. They demand their rights. They have one focus and that is winning the next election. GOP Democrats, there isn’t a dimes worth of difference any more. If incumbents are not dislodged in the mid term election and an Obama block put in place, Have mercy, it’s a new world, and Americans are wearing bulls eyes on our backs.
We have to remove these GOP idiots along with the Democrats as they are complicit…. they took money instead of their constituency.

  14. Mike Konkel says:

Newt is wrong and when he was on Fox News and they solicited emails, I sent one and told Newt to his face that it is principle over party.

I explained that how as a previously republican hoosier I have voted for Senator Richard Lugar in the past but Lugar should not take this for granted. As a matter of fact, he needs to be dumped. Lugar sees no problem with rubber stamping Obama’s czardom like Cass Sunstein.

Official republican party needs to wake up.

  15. I’m for the real conserative. Republican party needs to reform itself into what it waz or it will be gone. The majority of Americans want a real conservative party. NO MORE POLITICS AS USUAL AFTER 2010 AND BEYOND.

  16. Kelly S. says:

Some people just don’t get it. NRCC will not be getting any support from this conservative. Period. If, after all that has happened, the “republican” party can’t read the writing on the wall, then it’s time for them to go also. Either stand on conservative principals or go be a democrat. It’s that simple.

  17. Bombdog says:

I also wrote in my blog “Bombdog’s Bark” that the Republican Party needs to understand that we are tired of the reaching across the isle at the extent of compromising our Core Values. They need to understand they are the sum total of US, not we of them. The people are the power of the country and the Constitution, and principals of our Founding Fathers is our Guide. My Nation was founded and forged into it’s greatness on the sacrifices and blood of Patriots, Not VICTIMS and Parasites.

  18. John White says:

I know that the Des Moines Tea Party will never endorse any party. We can campaign and work for a candidate on a personal level but not as a group. It is my personal feeling that the Republican Party is very status quo. If one isn’t part of the known establishment one has a huge fight on their hands. Look at what McCain is doing to the grass roots candidates in the west. Yes the Republicans (like the current administration) (like Nancy and Harry) are completely out of touch with the real American Majority. We must replace them but we have to have viable candidates standing up from the grass roots level.

  19. Richard says:

My dad always taught me vote the person not the party newt may be old school but we are grass roots The nrcc won’t see a penny of my hard earned money
I’ve not yet donated to any candiate however I will during this election . I’ve never made call to my senator or my rep till this year
And there are many more like me out there
I want my Country Back and we gona take it

  20. jim says:

We freedom loving Americans are guided by the principles of our founding documents. Anyone who loves and defends these documents should have our support. Unfortunately absolute power corrupts absolutely, and the political party system which George Washington warned about is all about power and not principle. Taking back this country will have to involve serious vetting of every candidate one by one. However this is a fight that is worth fighting for the sake of freedom loving people everywhere.

  21. Dave says:

I basically agree that the Republican party has drifted way to far to the left since Ronald Reagan left office. I like what I hear from Sarah Palin; perhap she could get the party back on track. Be that as it may, all this talk about supporting a third party or the notion of supporting “the person rather than the party” is a dangerous formula for losing future elections and, thus, sacrificing some of our common conservative and libertarian principles to Progressive Democrats. Let’s remember that it is basically the “progressive” principles of the Democrat party that are largely responsible for the overbearing administrative state that has been incrimentally getting their socialistic agenda enacted over the past century. Sorry, but whether we like it or not, America has a two-party politcal system. And one of those political parties is basically a socialist party. Ultimately, just like the Democrats hijacked the Populist Movement, whenever some kind of movement pops up, one of the two parties will move in a hijack their agenda. Furthermore, though liberty and limited government need to remain our common vision, practically speaking we still need to focus on creating a strong coalition that can actually bring our vision to Washington. Remember, Reagan was able to win over conservative Democrats in order get elected. As elections approach, let’s just make sure that the political agenda (that will most likely be hijacked by Republicans)is an agenda that Reagan would approve of.

  22. Chuck Fowler says:

No more contributions to the GOP from me, either. If they can’t back real conservatives, as someone else said, let them write their own checks.

I’m a TEA partier and a Federalist and a Constitutionalist. When you find some of those running for office, let me know.

  23. PJ Wick says:

I am very disappointed that the GOP have dug their heels end and not supported Doug Hoffman, the last thing we need is another Spector, Snowe or Collins. I am very disappointed in Newt and all the rest who were for the Tea Party Patriots and now are turning there backs on them. The GOP should back off and let the People decide. We will remember this come voting time and donating time.

  24. greatscotts says:

It should come as no suprise that Gingrich would pull such a stunt. By the way, Newt Gingrich is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, which is clearly in the Global Elitists Camp and can be defined as a New World Order Brother. For anyone to call Newt Gingrich a bright guy has no idea what they are taking about. Gingrich is a traitor, just like the rest of them. Watch this video to see what other Conservatives think about Newt Gingrich. This proves that the GOP and the Demorats are 2 sides of the same coin. it is time to abandon the Republican Party and join with the Ron Paul Libetarian Party movement.

  25. Conservative Texas Grandmother says:

Eric, I have voted Republican for many years, and I’m even a card-carryig member of the Texas Federation of Republican Women. I was very disappointed when McCain won the Republican nomination in 2008, and I would have voted Independent or not voted at all if he had not chosen Sarah Palin as his running mate. Sarah energized the base, because of her true conservative values, and she brought RINO McCain hundreds of thousands maybe millions of votes he would not have gotten without her. Right now, our country needs more true conservatives running for office, regardless of which “party” they belong to. It is sometimes hard to tell the difference between Democrats and some of the Republicans, because they all seem to lean the same direction, which is the WRONG direction for our Republic. My Republican friends would probably be mortified if they knew that I donated to Doug Hoffman’s campaign, because I think that we need more representatives like him in Washington. More people need to look at the person and what they actually stand for and how they would vote on issues rather than which “party” they represent, That’s what’s wrong with Washington and our country right now! Too many people vote strictly along party lines regardless of how liberal or conservative the person running actually is. If a lot of the conservative and moderate Democrats and Independents had taken a harder, closer look at Obama, they would NOT have voted for him. Especially, if they could have forseen how he would actually govern, which is from the far, far left. I say to all those who vote only along “party” lines and not for the individual, they need to wake up and forget the “party”. It’s NOT ABOUT THE PARTY! It’s about our country! Vote for the ones who will best represent what you want for America! Vote for those who will actually work for you and not themselves or the big money, special interests, bankers, Wall Street CEO’s and labor unions who have bought off so many of our elected officials from both sides of the isle. Vote for those who will defend the Constitution and what it stands for and not for those who are trying to destroy it so they can grab more power and enslave you, your children and grandchildren to unsustainable national debt and taxes!

  26. Buckeye Guy says:

My war is against any representative that does not follow the will of the people or ignores the constitution. Plain and simple!

  27. Dennis Mahon says:

The GOP machine in NJ did the same backing Christ Christie, who should be in jail. They rigged the primaries and ran millions of dollars in dirty ads. It looks right now that Chrisie will loose and the
conservative movement will have to take over our party to get it back to where it is suppose to be.

  28. Tena Gallagher says:

The Republicans do not appear to have gotten the message. and too many of them have wanted to “claim” this movement as part of their party. I am not tied to ANY party. I am tied to my principles. Both Democrats and Republicans need to wake up and realize there is a movement afoot and NEITHER party is going to reap the benefits of the power we are gaining unless they adhere to the Constitution of the United States of America. We will find our own candidates who believe in LIMITED GOVERNMENT… not EXPANDED government which is what BOTH parties have been guilty of for far too long. WE ARE TIRED OF THEM ALL!

  29. Kim Misch says:

We conservatives are the true republicans. I believe in Jeffersonian Republicanism. That ideology encompasses conservatism. I don’t know what you call Newt Gingrich’s political persuasion maybe the Wishy-washy Party. Mr. Gingrich is a bright guy with a wealth of historical knowledge. But, his time in the political spotlight has come and gone.

  31. We are reaping what we have sown for decades. Voting or the McCain’s, The Bush’s.

And so many who idolize Reagan. He was a great man no doubt, but does anyone remember he was the one who started SHAMNESTY?

We need to hold their feet to the fire now. This is no time to mess around.

  32. Eric,

I am a former Reagan appointee (US Dept of State)and conservative Republican running for US Congress in CT’s 2nd District against a liberal Dem. - Joe Courtney. Conservatives have a hard time going up against the Party here but we are doing it and will succeed. The attitude toward conservatives from the CT GOP is this: “Just run your own campaign.” No help at all. So I am doing just that and have a lot of volunteer support… several hundred volunteers signed up already! The grass roots of the party contact me daily asking to help me. I attend tea parties and speak out, march in parades with my 8ft high Statue of Liberty and have formed the Constitution Brigade in CT. It’s growing by leaps and bounds every week. The MSM ignore us and the party regulars attack us for being principled. We are not going away and will remain that shining beacon on the hill. My campaign spent the summer helping local candidates and now is getting ready to ramp it up for my 2010 election. Conservatives must stick together and remain principled or we will be back in the same sore spot we’re in today in another couple of election cycles. I hope you’ll follow my campaign at novakforcongress.com and watch and support me as we take back Connecticut with principled politicians.

  33. mackp says:

Bad news for Newt you just cut your nose off. I’m a Reagan Republican and I will not bend. And if Newt thanks the Grassroots will follow is libral ways he is wrong. We are for the Sara Palins of the world. Newt you’r librals will not see the White House, except from the outside on Penns Ave. I will not send anymore money to the GOP. Newt step a side. Semper Fi

  34. Christopher says:

The only way that any real “change” can be made both this year, in 2010, and 2012 is that those people who really want Washington and the nation to improve have to declare first to themselves personally and then publicly to anyone who will listen (and maybe a few who will not) that they will truthfully be a Conservative first and a Republican second. Conservatism, not Republicanism, is the only way that the problems that we are facing now can be solved. The time for people to make this choice is now. They can either help by being part of the solution or get out of the way. It is that simple, both at the grassroots level and in Washington. Get Conservative or get out.

  35. Michelle says:

We have to stand by our principles! Rhinos need not apply!! These rhinos are the reason why we have to choose the lessor of two evils when we vote!! We need conservative candidates who respect and honor the constitution! All the other clowns have gotten us where we are now! Enough!! We are taking our country back!! I don’t believe a third party is going to work but we do have to back the conservative that is running.

  36. The republican party left us a long time ago. This race in NY is going to prove that we are real, and that our choice is not just R or D. There is another option. Go check out http://www.GOOOH.com. It is a system to remove the politicians from the House of Representatives and replace them with true representatives like you and me.

  37. katb9 says:

Gary Carlson go to TeaPartynation.com you’ll find links for most states there, grops and blogs also. Good luck and keep growing…………………

I am a member of the TeaParty MOvement. . .and feel we have made a big impact and work many Americans up to the calling. . Both parties need to realize when we vote it is for the Person not the Party. . and it is the Person who wants to represent the people. . not the Big Interest Groups. . .The Unions. . who are crooked and on the take for the most part. . but to be in this position. . First You must love this country and secondly you must Love the American People.
I am a senior and I am totally upset with Washington and this Administration .. I do not find the Republicans in unity. . and it is talk talk and more talk on Fox. . well We the people have spoken and they need to stand behind what the majority wants. They have allowed the Dems. to lock them out of committee meetings. .and even to the point that Pelosi had the locks changed on one chamber door. Is this the kind of behavior we want from those that were elected. It is bad enough we have jjobama who wants us all to drink the kool-aid and now this. S. Palin I am sure weight her thoughts on her endorsement and I would stand behind her. . she is one person who is not belimished or corrupt and this is upsetting to both parties. . .She has no IOU”s to anyone. . like the rest of the cronies do. . They should lead in the example she is setting for Politicians. . and listen to the voices of the People who have spoken on what they want . . .We have to deal with jjobama for 3+ years but those coming up for reelection must be thrown out. . any that have not sided with the Constitution. .Bill of Rights. . and God. . .This Great Nation and Her People.
I dread seeing what this country will become in the next few years if this isn’t stopped. . Not just for us but for our children. . grandchildren. . and the future of America.

  39. katb9 says:

WakeUp America, we the people need to take back our goverment. The “machine” just keeps telling us one thing then doing as they please once the reach DC. Most (not all) elected turn into “We Are Above the Little People” so we vote ours selves special healthcare, life time retirement same as the yearly wage, along with(while never asking) a yearly raise.
The NRCC and Newt are wrong to back that woman, not Doug Hoffman. But then look at their record of backing people who turn out to leftwingers.

We all should have seen this coming, did you see any of our elected show up and speak at any of local or the 912 TeaParty.

  40. Lin says:

Republicans will regret this move. There are thousands that are sick of the Republicans and their cowardness or they really are Democrats that ran on Republican ticket to get elected. There are plenty of them too. (McCain, this gal from NY). That is why Palin was such a threat to them. She is honest and has our conservative values. But, the Republicans as well as the Democrats tried to destroy her. I said REPUBLICANS as well as Democrats. Don’t want anything to do with the Republican party anymore.
They are in bed with the Barry regime.

  41. Janew49 says:

Rick, good idea, I have one hear now. I’m going to do the same.

  42. Cathy G says:

Everyone should send a copy of Eric Odom’s well put comments to the RNC, NRSC and the NRCC! Enough is enough. If they don’t change their ways quickly I think there should be a new party. The Constitution Party of WE THE PEOPLE.

  43. Janew49 says:

Nothing surprises me anymore. But i’ll tell you I really don’t understand why the NRCC would do this. What is it, all that matters is that Newt got egg on his face. He chose a lib, did he really think that we are going to sit by and take this. We conservatives want conservatives in office, what is so hard to understand about that? I don’t really care about the GOP, I guess they have to go down and we’ll have a new party, the GOP can be the 3rd party. It’s all about winning to them. To me it’s about FREEDOM & LIBERTY. Apparently, they didn’t hear us either! How does it feel to everyone to know that our representives don’t hear us in Washington and the party we have supported apparently, doesn’t understand, we didn’t march on Washington, to get a RINO, we have had enough! To the NRCC, you need to make a decision, either you are for the constitution or now! Oh yeah, and if you are endorced by ACORN, you won’t get a vote from me!!!!

  44. Perry says:

It’s time to form a new party. I would have suggested the Libertarian party but there’s simply too many Geraldo Riveras of the world that have muddied up that party’s name simply by labeling themselves as a libertarian. Michael Savage threatens to form a party and then run against Boxer or Feinstein for US Senate in California. If Savage forms a party, I’m joining. I don’t care about what that says about my libertarian principles. At this time we need to galvanize the ranks for the good fight of taking back this great nation. Borders, Language and Culture. This is Michael Savage’s three tiers.

  45. Connie Foust says:

Newt and his cronies are the problem, not the solution. I am supporting anyone from any party who follows the constitution and believes in American’s, not America!

  46. Bill Podger says:

    You are so right

  47. Rick Schwab says:

As near as I can tell, you are right on track. I am going to print off your letter and stuff it in my most recent RNCC post paid financial solicitation envelope to let them know what the base is thinking. Seems clear they don’t give a damn what we think. Until they do, they can write their own checks!

  48. new-frontier says:

I knew the GOP was part of the problem in the first place. When Newt supported the tea party movement back in April, I felt as though it was the beginning of the END for this honest movement.

So- good! I was surprised they could pull the wool over the eyes of the people this long! I’m glad they showed their TRUE colors- Now that the GOP is through WASTING OUR TIME- Tea Party Patriots can get back to the business of repairing this nation’s Constitution.

  49. Woody36060 says:

If you want the real story on why Newt Gingrich is supporting Dede Scozzafava, get a copy of the video,”The Real Newt Gingrich” at http://www.JBS.org and you will see that they are REALLY birds of a feather. PLEASE folks, do your homework on Newt. He is old school, more of the same old politics.

  50. Gary Carlson says:

    Eric:

We are Reagan Republicans. I was a political appointee for President Reagan. President wore the POW-MIA bracelet of our brother-in-law. I also ran for the US Senate in MN in 1996 on the GOP ticket but lost out in the primary. I also ran for the House in 1984 in MT on the GOP ticket.

We agree with you. NRCC should have stayed away from their choice, period.

Since we are relocating back to MT we welcome your input and guidance as to who are your contact points for ther Tea Party movement within MT. We would like to combine the Reagan Republicans with the Tea party people in MT to replace Baucus, Tester and the governor, Schweitzer.
